As a child at Penshurst, Mary danced before Elizabeth I when the monarch stopped by on a royal visit. Some years later, as a teenager, she would again dance for Queen Elizabeth, this time at court (Lamb n. pag.). Early in the reign of James I, she was to dance in the presence of royalty once more: in The Masque of Blackness (created by Ben Jonson and Inigo Jones) she performed alongside other aristocratic women and Queen Anne herself. In 1619, Wroth would walk in the queen’s funeral procession.
